I have been a coach for 12 years where I have taught youth cross country skiing, orienteering, ultimate frisbee and sea kayaking within club sports, through Active U at Lakehead University, the Lappe Ski Club ski at school program and through Such A Nice Day Sea Kayak Adventures. As both a paid and voluntary coach, I have created and implemented lesson plans for kids from the ages of 5-18, that are interesting, engaging, and appropriate.
Outside of sport, I have done mentoring through Lakehead University where I worked for two years as an Achievement Program Support Staff and designed and implemented lesson plans in line with the curriculum for low-income students (Grade 4-12) across Thunder Bay. I also was involved briefly in the Aboriginal Mentorship Program that provides opportunities for secondary school aboriginal students to get mentorship in subjects that they are struggling to understand. I have also been part of Let’s Talk Science program where I delivered STEM based programming to secondary students.
I have strong project management skills. As a Senior Research Assistant at NOSM U I have been a coordinator for both national and international projects around medical education and social accountability over the past 3 years. Through this experience I have been exposed to some of the most current practical and theoretical backgrounds for teaching education including two eyed seeing, feminist perspectives, community based and collaborative learning, appreciative inquiry, deliberative dialogue, and arts-based methods. This experience taught me time management skills as well as professionalism and communication skills. I gained the skills to work in a fast-paced environment through innovative problem-solving solutions. I recognize the importance of collaboration and community engagement to implement a program or project as each of these programs involves collaborating with the community.
I have been a sport coach for 12 years for children from ages 5-18. I also did babysitting as a teenager to kids, babies and toddlers. I have my Standard First Aid and CPR C as well as my vulnerable sectors check.
