First let me introduce myself. My name is Wanessa Maia and I am 32 years old. I got my degree in journalism in 2001. I come from Rio de Janeiro, which is a beautiful beach city in Brazil. I am a very active and energetic girl who likes all kinds of sports and outdoors.

I come from a very united and big family who gave great values and morals. I have been having experiences abroad since I was 20 years old. My first trip was in 1998 when I backpacked through the US east coast to learn more about the American Culture which was the specialization I chose to follow my career and to research to my college thesis about JFK. In 2001/2002, I did an exchange program in Pennsylvania, called work and travel (you learn English while you work). Then in December 2003 I decided to be an au pair in the States (Virginia). I too care of four girls (5, 2 and twins since they were newborn) and while I was an au pair I studied English language and American History and Politics. I traveled a lot as an au pair. I went to almost all US east coast, west and a bit of the south of the USA. I think to travel it is the best way to understand the world we live so it is my favorite thing to do. I went back to Brazil in January 2006 to start my MBA in International Relations but I realized I had lived abroad for so long that I got used to it, so I found the Canadian opportunity as a live in caregiver and I realized I fitted in the program and I decided to call Canada home.
I have worked in Canada for almost three years now. In my first family here I took care of two cutie twins ( 2 years old) for four months then unfortunately their mom decided to be a stay-home mother so she didn’t need my service anymore. Sadly, I found another family which probably was the most challenging work of my life. I took care of two boys. One was perfect. I started work with him since he was six months and when I left turned 2 and half years. The older brother was a kid with severe behavior problem and almost nobody was able to work with him. I feel a very good feeling of accomplishment because many trained teachers couldn’t succeed with him. I created a very close and respectful relationship with me and I was probably the only person he would listen. Feeling that I already did my best with them I decided it was time to move on and try something different and I took care of a sweet baby for six months (he was 6 months when I started) then it terminated because he was going to the Day Care.

My parents are divorced. My father Osvaldo (56) is a computer programmer and my mom a lawyer. I have a big family with many cousins, uncles, aunts and grandmother. But I am only child. They are very important to me. I love so much foreign languages I decided to put together two of my passions – English and to help people so I create a volunteer work (by myself) in my city to teach English to poor kids because I wanted to do something would help them to have more opportunity in life.
I am a very responsible and mature girl. I love to travel and to know new cultures. I am open mind but with moral limits. I have just moved from Vancouver and I am looking for an opportunity in this new city that I would like to call home. I am available to start right now and stay at least one year commitment. I do think I have great personal skills combined with my work experiences what I believe is a great combination.

July 2009 to December 2009 – Child Caregiver

 Look after all the needs of a 6 months baby boy until he started Day Care.

2007 to June 2009 – Live-in Caregiver Program

 Look after a special needs child with an emotional delay and very challenging to discipline; I had worked hard to develop a strong and mutually respective relationship with him, succeeding where trained teachers have failed. At the same time looking after a great two years old boy.
 Look after all the children needs.


2003 – 2005 – Au Pair in America Exchange Program, Washington DC

 Childcare and Cultural exchange program of the American Institute for Foreign Study.
 Provided 45 hours per week of childcare for a family in Washington DC, USA. Position which demanded responsibility, flexibility and mature attitude.


2002 – McDonald’s – Cultural Exchange Program, PA, USA

 Front desk and cook line position.

 Provided me work experience in a fast-paced environment.



Volunteer Work

2008 – Frontier College – Canada
 Taught English to immigrants; helping them to get used with the Canadian language, costumes and culture. I very rewarding job when you can give back to the community.

2003 – English Teacher – Brazil
 I created a program to teach English to poor kids in Brazil from the age 8 to 14 years old. It was my way to give back to the society and help these children have more contact with education. I also talked to them how education can change your life even in a country like Brazil.
