Caregiver for Elderly Lady with Dementia

PD
Active:

A caregiver for one senior lady with Dementia is required. My mother is moving into a nursing home in September but needs more care at night than the home provides. We need someone to work midnight to 6am. My mother will, usually, be asleep when you arrive. She did go through a period, a couple of months ago, of sleeping very little which made the night position difficult, but lately has only been waking once each night to use the washroom, usually around 2am. If my mother wakes during the night, we need someone to make sure she does not get out of bed until the home PSW comes to her room to assist her. Given the staff to patient ratios, it is possible that the PSW will be busy with another resident and my mother will have to wait. She is quite good for walking during the day but her cognition and co-ordination are worse at night and, waking up in the dark, impairs her further. My mother has been injured in falls at night before so we have, for over a year, been having homecare aides sit up at night in her room. It is possible that the bed will have an alarm on it which should sound if my mother tries to get up. It should sound in the nursing station but whether we can also get it to sound in the room, I am not certain. In order that the alarm can be heard, having headphones or earbuds on your ears will not be permitted. Most of the time my mother is not too bad. She can have good days and bad days but usually responds well to reminders and redirections, especially if she is interacted with. When having a good day, she can participate quite well in a conversation. She does suffer from Sundowners and can become somewhat anxious in the evenings. She currently becomes anxious when my father has his nap on the couch in the afternoon as she then feels alone and can wander in search of someone. This is greatly helped when she is with someone she knows so your job will become easier the longer you are there. My mother is a mild mannered lady. She requires assistance for personal care events such as dressing and toileting and getting up out of a chair but still has enough strength and awareness to assist. We expect that the home PSW will be doing the toileting in the night and you must primarily make sure my mother waits for her safely. Should she have a very restless night, you may need to let her sit up with you for a bit and possible get a cup of tea in the lounge although that has not been happening recently. During the day, she can walk unaided with a walker although we do always walk beside her. My brothers and sister and I visit very often. Rarely is there a day or evening when someone does not come over. We are trying to limit the number of caregivers for my mother as too many different people are unsettling to her. We will require references, a police check, and an interview. Please outline your professional qualifications, experience and salary requested. The nursing home in in the centre of Dundas and public transit is nearby.
