My father is a venerable elder of 85 years. His health situation is complicated by blindness, the result of glaucoma, and the onset of Lewy Bodies Dementia. These conditions necessitate personalized care and assistance with day-to-day tasks. It is imperative that he receives help with toileting as and when required, thus minimizing any potential for discomfort or awkwardness. In the morning, a caregiver would assist him with his personal hygiene routines. This includes the cleaning of his teeth and thorough washing, be it a weekly shower or more frequent sponge baths. Despite his visual impairment, my father retains the ability to shave himself, maintaining at least a small degree of personal autonomy. He also requires assistance to get downstairs. Thankfully, the house is equipped with a chairlift designed to make multi-level navigation simpler and safer. The service of meal preparation is an essential part of the caregiver's duties and this includes the making of a hearty breakfast, typically consisting of aromatic coffee, a delicious pastry, and a refreshing fruit salad. A simple lunch is also needed, often a filling sandwich and sweet cookies for dessert. It is crucial that he is well-hydrated throughout the day so his caretaker should ensure he drinks plenty of water frequently. His overall health should be monitored daily. This means he has his blood pressure taken and recorded every morning along with managing a regular medicine schedule at least a couple of times a day. In the peaceful afternoon, my father relishes his time residing comfortably in the living room chair. To keep his mind sharp and spirit vibrant, the caregiver would read to him and aid him in some physical activities too. He uses a small portable elliptical machine for a few minutes of exercise within the comfort of his home. In the warm summer months, he enjoys short, leisurely walks outdoors, adeptly supported, of course. At other times, he's usually content to listen to entertainment from the TV, radio, or his favourite music, as it filters through from his audio system. Enjoying an undisturbed afternoon nap for a few hours is also part of his daily rituals. When it's time to retire to bed at night, he would need assistance to make his way upstairs, clean his teeth and change into his comfortable pyjamas. The caregiver will be expected to be in the nearby bedroom, always alert and ready to assist, in case he needs to go to the bathroom during the night. Along with personal caregiving, there is incidental light housework involved in the caregiver's role. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of his room and personal bathroom, laundering his clothes, putting his used dishes in the dishwasher, and ensuring that the kitchen floor is kept spotless. Despite our best efforts to stick to a predictable daily routine, the reality is that my father occasionally experiences insomnia or hypersomnia. Therefore, a degree of flexibility and understanding is essential. His mental health at times includes experiences of hallucinations. However, he is not resistant to acknowledging these as hallucinations when it is patiently explained to him. Cognitively, my father remains remarkably lucid for his age. He doesn't suffer from significant memory problems and is still able to engage in, as well as enjoy, thoughtful and intelligent conversations. His personality traits are largely undiminished which is to say, my father possesses an easy-going character and isn't prone to being irritable or difficult.
