  About Me
 
I would like to respectfully submit my attached resume for the above said position. I have over 20 years managerial, administrative, and leadership experience in the field of active living. I completed my Master of Arts in Leisure Services Administration at the University of Victoria. My practical research project working in cooperation with the North Vancouver Recreation Commission was in providing Universal Leisure Access for Low Income Families to increase their health and well being in the community. I completed my Aquatic Rehabilitation Specialist certification recently along with attending a Yoga Instructor conference at UVIc with training on trauma and mindfulness skills along with restorative yoga. I having worked one-on-one with a number of clients with various health issues in the pool, weight room, their homes and in other facilities.
I have worked as a Community Health Worker (home care nurses aide with seniors ) and recently as an activity assistant in the Cowichan Valley and did the same job as an aquatic & physical therapy rehabilitation assistant working with the Physiotherapist for Vancouver ( Island Health ) Authority in the Oceanside (Qualicum Beach/Parksville) area of Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada. - also in the Cowichan Valley area in the past. I have also worked in the Residential/Adult Day Care programs in Activities/rehabilitation ass't with the OT & PT's. at Eaglepark Long term Care in Qualicum Beach, the Priory in Victoria, and at Acacia, Shawnigan Lake, BC. This activation work involved programming and implementing a healthy ‘active living’ health care model to keep seniors and other members of the community as independent/safe in their homes as well as in a residential setting and the community. My class 4 (unrestricted) business driver’s license is current and in good standing. I used to drive the bus and bring clients in their wheelchairs and walkers to our adult day programs providing meals, mental and physical armchair exercises amongst many other activities in the community as well. I have been trained as a Registered Residential and Home Care Nurse’s Aide as well as an Activity Assistant with vunerable populations on top of all my other Activity, Recreational, and Leisure degrees and experience.
I have also taught Ashtanga Yoga classes at the new Aquatic Centre in Duncan, B. C. as well as aquacize classes including aqua therapy & rehab, aqua abs, aqua core and aqua kick cardio at the pools in Courtenay/Comox, West Vancouver, North Vancouver and The Commonwealth Pool Edmonton. I have also taught aquatic arthritis classes in the past as well as working one-on-one with an MS, spinal, heart & stoke, arthritis and a variety of other clients in the pool to help improve her mobility, balance, and strength. I have also worked with clients who have various illnesses/diseases in the weight room as well. I worked with a physiotherapist in our local pool with a post-surgery client doing rehabilitation assisting. I have also trained First Aid/CPR, AED (instructors/IT's) in BC & Alberta/NWT. My registration as an RHCA is current in BC and I also completed my Activity Assistant certification at VIU several years ago. I have worked with numerous palliative patients.
I also worked as the Cowichan Valley Coordinator for the 1st ever “Relay for Life” for the Canadian Cancer Society in the spring of 2008. I have also run Healthy Heart Programs through the Heart & Stroke Foundation for seniors at the pool in Pender Harbour (Dance for Heart), N. Van as well as teaching arthritis seniors aquacize classes there as well as the pool in W. Van. I also was a guest presenter for the Red Cross at one of their conferences on “Well Being Entering the Year 2000” using the Active Living model. I have also worked as the Technical Director for the Life Saving Society for Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
I feel that I can bring a vast wealth of knowledge and experience to this position as well as a lot of positive and creative energy. I am extremely hard working and would love the opportunity to be a part of your organization. My St. Johns Standard First Aid/CPR C/AED for Health Care Provider's is current. (exp. March 2020) I have taught numerous First Aid/CPR Instructor/Trainer courses for the Red Cross & the Life Saving Society Alta/NWT branch in the past.
