  About Me
 
Born in Manchester, England in 1982, I was raised and educated in the UK. I furthered my teaching career in Swansea, Wales, where I lived with my husband and three children, before emigrating to Quebec in June 2015. In August 2020, we relocated to Kanata, Ottawa and I commenced my nannying profession, working with two lovely families in the Nepean region.

In 1998, I successfully graduated from Secondary School, achieving high grades in all subjects. In the summer of 2001, I graduated from college with A-Levels in English Language (comprehension, expression and linguistics), English Literature (decoding, phonology, orthography, morphology, semantics, syntax and fluency), Law (knowledge and understanding of the English Legal system) and Media Studies (investigating and creating media, critical perspectives, research and production).

Developing my career in 2005, I completed my Teaching Assistant education and work experience, and achieved the full Grade A award as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant.

Taking a career break to raise my young children, I expanded my knowledge with The Open University, studying Social Sciences (criminology, economics, geography, politics, international studies, psychology and sociology). I succeeded in the modules and assessments and received full credits in 2009.

Upon raising my young family to school age, I returned to work as a Teaching Assistant, and advanced my knowledge and application in more specialised areas; which led to the privilege of being selected for the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Learning Pathway, and subsequently gaining my HLTA accreditation (June 2015).

In addition to working with children, I love the outdoors and regularly partake in activities including skating, cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling, gardening, growing vegetables with my teenagers (aged 18, 17 and 13 years), family camping and road trips.

My alternative hobbies include yoga, cooking, reading, swimming; and painting with my daughter. When I have spare time, I enjoy restoring old furniture, learning to play the piano and tutoring my niece and nephew.

Currently, I am a full-time nanny caring for two little girls, aged 16 months and 3 years old, within their home, whilst their parents work from their home office.

I care for all aspects of the children’s daily routines including:

Being a mother of 3 teenagers aged 18, 17 and 14, I also have many years of experience in caring for babies and children including feeding, weaning, daytime and nighttime routines, toilet training, achieving milestones, social activities (playgroups, library rhyme and story times, baby massage, swimming etc, ) cooking nutritious meals and a vast array of curricular and extra curricular activities.

In June 2015, following 6 years of teaching experience and supporting Special Educational Needs, I was awarded a Higher Level Teaching Assistant diploma. During my years of working with children in school, I individually supported many children with a variety of special educational needs including autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Down’s Syndrome, global delay, severe dyslexia, dyspraxia and child neglect. With each individual student, my goal was to enhance attainment in core curriculum subjects and extra-curricular activities. In addition, I regularly worked with students to support and improve their social skills, cognitive and emotional development and psycho-motor skills, based on individual ability. As each student presented different and complex difficulties and disorders, I ensured that their intervention, activities and resources were individually adapted to meet their needs.

Integrating regular observations and assessments into activities, I monitored individual student progress, their difficulties and behavior, and worked closely with class teachers to:

• evaluate student progress, concerns and behavior;
• assist with Individualized Education Plans;
• differentiate tasks, lesson materials, objectives and homework;
• provide specialized and adapted resources; and
• communicate with parents.

My focus and attention were to support individual students in all aspects of their development.
I also supported several students with behavioral issues due to environmental, physical, medical, social and cognitive difficulties. Predominantly, this involved - observation and alertness to ‘trigger factors’, intervention to stabilize undesirable and unpredictable behavior, supporting the class teacher during lessons to maintain a productive learning environment, counseling (prior to, during and post outbursts), devising and implementing reward schemes and sanction techniques; and providing resources designed to manage behavior.

Further to leading the school’s speech and language programs, I provided additional support to groups of students presenting similar difficulties in the following areas: literacy, numeracy, social skills and Development Coordination Disorder (DCD). I was responsible for planning, preparing and conducting the group sessions, including creating and providing relevant resources. I monitored and recorded individual student progress, evaluated attainment and provided feedback to teachers, support staff, parents and health care professionals. My records and feedback also participated in the development of IEP objectives.
Simultaneously, as the primary carer of a student with Type 2 Diabetes, I was responsible for his daily medical needs for several years. This included regular, daily monitoring of the child, blood sugar tests, delivering insulin, monitoring and assisting the child during breaks, mealtimes and physical activities, record keeping and daily communication with the child’s parents.

Furthermore, I have successfully completed many training courses including Read, Write, Inc; The National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (The LNF); Numicon; Speech and Language Link, Emergency First Aid at work and Pediatric Basic Life Support.
