Hello, I am a 61 year young Granny who loves people in general, but especially likes working with the elderly. I have approximately 3 years experience working in an Adult Day Centre in Vancouver - a place the elderly would come for their own recreation but also to provide respite for their caregiver. Besides being a Recreation Assistant, I was the Program Coordinator. I also worked privately as a companion to the elderly in their own homes. I worked with people who had dementia, Alzheimer's and Schizophrenia. I loved this work. In the capacity of a private companion I provided friendship, took my clients on walks or outings, played games and sang, engaged in conversations, did food preparation, helped them get into bed and up again, helped them use the toilet, fed them etc, as necessary. I have the skill of listening to the same stories repeatedly without losing my interest. I also cared for my father for several years after his stroke. We used an alphabet board to communicate, and needed to use a wheelchair which I managed for him. The elderly deserve the best care and consideration possible. After a long life with it's shares of joys and sorrows, they deserve respect, care and comfort.

I worked as a school teacher for several years after earning my degree in Education at the University of British Columbia. I also worked privately as a tutor to children in Elementary School. Some of these children had special needs and learning challenges. I then went on to operate the Religious Education Program at a local church. This included recruiting and training volunteers to teach the children, teaching the children catechism, and producing a school play which I wrote myself. Next I worked for several years in and After School Program, providing supervision and companionship after school hours to children in elementary school. I have done a great deal of volunteer work with children including face painting, arts and crafts, outings and teaching skills.
