A position is available for a personal support worker to support a 65 year old retired male dentist who has recently been diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia (FTD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He has excellent walking abilities, a good level of independance, and a friendly happy attitude. His home is located at Bathurst and Steeles in Toronto. The main work activities include preparing meals, driving short distances, going for walks, supervision during recreational activities, general cleaning and tidying, laundry, shopping for groceries, and general personal support. Work activities may include: • Maintain medical records. • Assist patients with daily activities. • Give medications • Engage patient in exercises or activities. • Feed patient. • Assess physical conditions of patient to aid in diagnosis or treatment. • Teach basic living or other adaptive skills to patient or caregivers. • Accompany patient on outings to provide assistance. • Apply bandages, dressings, or splints. • Administer therapy treatments to patient using hands or physical treatment aids. • Maintain records of patient care, condition, progress, or problems to report and discuss observations with supervisor. • Provide patient with help moving in and out of beds, baths, wheelchairs, or automobiles and with dressing and grooming. • Bathe patient. • Care for patient by changing bed linens, washing and ironing laundry, cleaning, or assisting with their personal care. This includes changing diapers and wiping their bottom after going to the bathroom. • Entertain, converse with, or read aloud to patient to keep them mentally healthy and alert. • Plan, purchase, prepare, or serve meals to patient or other family members, according to prescribed diets. • Check patients' pulse, temperature, and respiration. • Provide patient and families with emotional support and instruction in areas such as preparing healthy meals, living independently, and adapting to disability. • Perform a variety of duties as requested by client, such as obtaining household supplies or running errands. • Direct patient in simple prescribed exercises. • Massage patient or apply preparations or treatments, such as liniment, alcohol rubs, or heat-lamp stimulation. • Administer prescribed oral medications, and ensure the patient takes their medicine. • Accompany patient to doctors' offices or on other trips outside the home, providing transportation, assistance, and companionship.
